Photoelectric Sensor Case Study

This is often easier said than done, as changing one component may require you to change another.

Consider photoelectric sensors for instance. In certain applications, photoelectric sensors take up too much space. As a result, many companies resort to using optical fibers, regardless of their high installation cost. Fortunately, our sensor manufacturing partners at Contrinex have developed a solution to this problem: a 4 mm diameter or M5 threaded photoelectric sensor. These sensors work great in all applications including small conveyors, typically used for packaging, automation and assembly, robots, and grippers.

Balancing Reliability, Cost, and Simplicity

From a mechanical standpoint, the cylindrical housing on these miniature photoelectric sensors is very robust. Despite its size, it has an IP67 protection rating and will hold up in all applications. With pre-calibrated sensing ranges of 12, 24, 60 or 120 mm for the LTR version and up to 500 mm for the LLR version, installation is easy and low-cost compared to the alternative. What’s more, any needed adjustments are much easier because they work with visible red light (630 nm). Don’t let its small form factor fool you, though. Thanks to advanced focusing technology found in its integral optics, the sensor’s light spot has a diameter of just 6 mm with a sensing range of 50 mm, depending on the model you choose. What this means is that even the smallest objects can be detected reliably, regardless of throughput.
